Berlusconi Sentenced To A Year In Jail

Silvio Berlusconi

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been convicted and sentenced to a year in jail today. Heard he was wiretapping case related to the 2006 battle for control of a bank to discredit a political rival.

Silvio Berlusconi, has previously denied all charges.

The verdict does not really mean Berlusconi will go behind bars because under Italian law, he is not expected to serve any prison term until all possible appeal trials have been carried out.

His centre-right coalition finished third in parliamentary elections that saw no clear winner.

Talks on forming a new government in Italy are expected to begin March 20 according to a leading news agency.
